What is DPI, and why does it matter?

Every digital photo is made of a fixed grid of tiny squares called pixels — a typical phone photo might be 4000 pixels wide and 3000 pixels tall. When you print that photo, those pixels get stretched across a physical size, like 30 centimeters. DPI (dots per inch) simply measures how tightly packed those pixels end up on the paper.

Pack a lot of pixels into a small area, and the print looks sharp and detailed — that's a high DPI. Stretch the same pixels across a much bigger area, like a poster, and each pixel has to cover more physical space — the print looks softer or even blocky up close. That's a low DPI.

There's no single "correct" DPI — it depends on the size and how close people will stand to look at it. A photo book viewed inches from your face needs more DPI than a poster viewed across a living room. That's why this tool shows a quality range instead of a single pass/fail number — so you can judge it against how the print will actually be used.

Frequently asked questions

Can I improve the resolution of a small photo?

Not really — software can upscale an image (adding new pixels through interpolation or AI), which can help a little for moderate enlargements, but it can't recover detail that was never captured. If a photo shows red at your target size, upscaling might nudge it into the orange zone, not into green. For an important print, the honest fix is a higher-resolution source file, not a bigger export.

What's the difference between DPI and PPI?

PPI (pixels per inch) describes your digital image — how many pixels it packs into each inch when printed at a given size. DPI (dots per ink per inch) describes the printer — how many dots of ink it lays down per inch. In everyday use, and on this site, people say "DPI" to mean PPI, and that's the number we calculate: how many of your photo's pixels land in each printed inch.

What size can I print my photo at?

Upload it above and scroll through the table — every common size is checked automatically. As a rule of thumb, a 12-megapixel phone photo (around 4000×3000 px) comfortably covers up to roughly 30×40 cm at good quality, and can stretch to poster sizes viewed from across a room.

What resolution do I need for a poster on my wall?

Posters are usually viewed from a couple of meters away, so 150 DPI (our "good quality" tier) already looks sharp. You don't need 300 DPI unless someone will stand close to inspect it — that's really only necessary for handheld prints and photo books.

Does the file format (JPG vs PNG) affect print quality?

Not directly — what matters is the pixel dimensions (width × height), not the file format or file size. A small, heavily-compressed JPG and an uncompressed PNG with the same pixel dimensions will print at the same resolution. Format affects color depth and compression artifacts, not how many pixels you have to work with.

Why does cropping change what size I can print?

Cropping removes pixels. If you crop a photo before printing — say, to remove a cluttered background — you're left with fewer pixels than the original file had, which lowers the maximum print size. Check your resolution after cropping, not before.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. Every calculation on this page happens inside your own browser, using JavaScript. Your photo's pixels are read locally to measure its dimensions — the file itself is never transmitted anywhere.

Why do print shops sometimes disagree with this tool?

Some print shops apply their own upscaling or sharpening before printing, which can make a borderline photo look better than the raw numbers suggest. Others are simply trying to sell you the largest size possible. This tool gives you the neutral, calculated answer so you can make an informed decision either way.
